American Artist highlights the Lincoln Center show.

June 8, 2007

Hello All:

I wanted to drop a line and thank everyone who came out last night. According to the manager, it was the best opening for their gallery in memory.

I am very very flattered and love you all. Thank you for a fun night. I left laden with flowers, wine, and a very delicious cupcake and a girl can't really ask for more than that. I was also told beforehand that with every major gallery opening, there will always be one surprise guest, and this time that award goes to the parents of one of my best childhood friends from Georgia: Mr and Mrs. Shoemaker, I am touched.

A special thanks must also be extended to Tim Bush and Jason Watson for their help with set up and cheerleading. I could not have done it without you. And of course, thanks to everyone at Lincoln Center who believed in mine and Matthew's work enough to host this event.

The show will run through the rest of the month, so keep spreading the word about both the gallery and our work. To those of you who could not make it, please stop by over the next few weeks. Lets make this only the beginning.

Yay art.

All my love,
Ann Marshall

Hello friends, colleagues, and far-flung acquaintances:

It's finally happened.

I have a show in New York.

Please join myself and Matthew Wood for the opening of our two-person show on Thursday, June 7th from 5:30 to 7:30 at the Gallery at Lincoln Center (concourse level at the Metropolitan Opera House). All are invited.

This show is due in large part to Lincoln Center's new efforts to draw in younger and more diverse audiences, so your attendance is especially important. Bring friends and tell everyone you know. I'd love to see the house packed so this opportunity is available in the future for other visual artists.

Our work will be on view through the month of June.

I look forward to seeing you all.

Much Thanks,
Ann Marshall

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Ann Marshall and Matthew Wood
exhibition dates: June 7 - June 31.
Opening Reception: June 7th, 2007 5:30 - 7:30

The Gallery at Lincoln Center is pleased to present the New York debut of Ann Marshall and Matthew Wood.

Beneath their initial decadent impression, Ann Marshall's evocative paper creations hint at the uneasy compromise of individuals existing in chaotic, conflicting, and sometimes overwhelming environments. Her accomplished technique marries many contradictions: the traditional and contemporary, materialism and humanism, ultra-refined pastel renderings and recycled women's magazines. All are visually merged into something intuitive, sophisticated, and curiously organic. Uneasily steeped in a bizarre biological or material decadence, her subjects remain absorbed by their own individual narratives and inner realities. The complicated result is slightly unsettling and startlingly beautiful.

Matthew Wood's work has been influenced by Cubism, Abstract Expressionism, Minimalism, and theories surrounding 'New Abstraction.' By engaging in a process consisting of drawing, photography, cutting, and layering, Wood creates his
vibrant works known as 'biomorphagrams.' Wood began the this process by photographing pedestrian shadows and allowing these forms to evolve into abstract singular representations. By placing his resulting "symbols" into compositions, he created his visual language. Wood believes, that "Similar to
cloud tectonics, Biomorphagrams are about interpretation. Therefore, the
question, 'What should I be seeing?' is irrelevant. The question should be, 'Do
you see what I see?'"

Matthew Wood grew up in Minneapolis, MN Minnesota and Dallas, Texas. In 2000, Wood received a BFA in painting from Kansas City Art Institute and thereafter then moved to New York City to attend NYU. Currently, Matthew Wood lives and works in Brooklyn.

Ann Marshall was raised in Atlanta, Georgia. She attended School of Visual Arts in New York City and worked as an ethnographer, as an award winning children's book illustrator, and as a portrait and fine artist. She has exhibited in both Los Angeles and New York. Her work is held in both public and private collections.
